Studio DFB is pleased to present ICONOCLASM, a two-person exhibition by Francesca Nesteri and Salvatore Cammilleri.
Bas-reliefs and icons that invert the meaning of veneration, blurring the significance of worship.
On one side, the artificial light of LEDs sanctifies pop icons; on the other, Byzantine icons without divinity, rendered human.
LEDs illuminate new prayers on wood, while gold erodes an increasingly fragile humanity.
Salvatore Cammilleri creates secular saints—timeless faces of the twentieth century—catalysts for synthetic, secular prayers. Francesca Nesteri forges new ancient icons from which, within the burnt gold, the faces of ordinary people emerge. Their stories remain unknown to us, yet in their anonymity they reveal a desire for empathy that we seek to rediscover with renewed hope.
Iconoclasm not as destruction, but as a metaphor for the creation of new images and new prayers, moving through the global disorder that surrounds us.
For the occasion, Salvatore Cammilleri will install a permanent sculpture entitled We Are All Fried. The work will be integrated into the remains of a tree located in front of the entrance to Studio DFB.
