MASSIMO ORSI

Trait d’Union

Opening Reception

From 30 October to 30 November 2026, PROSA contemporanea presents Trait d’Union, a solo exhibition by Massimo Orsi, curated by Alberto Dambruoso.

A thread runs through Massimo Orsi’s artistic practice: the OK logo, the distinctive sign of his work, which the artist deconstructs, recomposes and transforms, exploring its expressive possibilities while questioning its meaning. An apparently simple and immediately recognisable element thus becomes a tool for reflecting on contemporary society and the language of communication.

The exhibition features a series of rugs made in Pakistan in 2001, crafted from wool on a cotton warp and hand-knotted and finished by local artisans. Inspired by Eastern aniconic decorative arts and artefacts, these works represent one of the most significant moments in Orsi’s artistic research and embody the deeper meaning of the exhibition’s title, Trait d’Union.

The exhibition also includes three works painted directly onto raw jute canvas: two created by the artist before the knotted rugs, and a third produced specifically for this exhibition.

Within the woven structure of the rugs, the OK logo encounters an artisanal and decorative tradition deeply rooted in Eastern culture. The sign is repeated, fragmented and sometimes camouflaged to the point of becoming almost unrecognisable, while remaining the sole graphic element characterising these works. Transformed from a symbol of Western communication into an ornamental motif, the logo becomes interwoven with the very structure of the rug.

The sign becomes a weave, the weave becomes a language, and the artwork becomes a space for cultural encounter.

As Orsi himself states, the rugs represent “the ultimate attempt to bring together two cultures that have always stood in opposition to one another.”

This statement captures the complexity of these works: rather than simply juxtaposing different visual elements, the artist seeks to establish a point of contact between distant cultural worlds, preserving their distinctive identities while bringing their differences into dialogue.

In this encounter, Trait d’Union becomes a bond that crosses geographical, cultural and expressive boundaries. Painting meets craftsmanship; the language of the logo engages with Eastern decorative traditions; contemporary communication enters into dialogue with an ancient visual culture. The rug thus becomes a symbolic space in which these differences can coexist and generate a new form of expression.

Orsi’s approach reflects a conception of art grounded in freedom of experimentation and the independence of artistic research, far removed from adherence to predetermined formulas. As curator Alberto Dambruoso observes, the artist does not seek to follow a single artistic language rigidly, but instead asserts his freedom to employ different techniques, materials and styles without establishing a hierarchy among them. This freedom has enabled him to pursue an independent artistic path, unaffected by changing trends and market expectations.

With Trait d’Union, Massimo Orsi invites viewers to look beyond the immediate recognisability of the sign and discover its transformations and potential for creating connections. Within the rugs, the logo disappears and re-emerges, relinquishing its original function to acquire a new meaning: it becomes the thread through which two cultures encounter one another, question one another and attempt to draw closer.

An attempt at union that does not erase differences, but transforms them into an opportunity for dialogue.
