DUPLICES brings into relation two artistic practices that, although coming from different languages, share a tension toward constructing the image as a space of inquiry hence the subtitle Their self‑portraits by Agnese Fantozzi photographer and interior designer with international experience intertwine with the wire‑sculptures of Bruno Melappioni giving life to a visual device based on duplication duplication of the body of the gaze of the form of time of matter The exhibition does not simply present two artists but two ways of generating reality through its multiplication
The photographic practice of Agnese Fantozzi is rooted in a technical and compositional awareness developed through years of work in diverse cultural contexts from Australia to Japan from California to New York and through experiences as a set photographer In her self‑portraits this experience condenses into a gesture of self‑duplication the self‑portrait is already in itself an act of doubling so the artist is simultaneously subject and author body and director presence and construction The sculpture of Bruno Melappioni by contrast is deeply rooted in physicality He has always worked with iron his most congenial language because it is the material in which his vision finds resistance friction possibility

Working on the dynamic lines of Agnese Fantozzi’s photographs Bruno Melappioni adds to those images a new duplication which is that of his vision and interpretation the result is of surprising lightness and elegance a perfect coexistence between the writing of light of photography and the new shadows that the metal lines project onto the photographic surface In this operation emerges the experience of Bruno Melappioni in theatre and film set design where it is necessary to evoke worlds with a few essential elements building presences through subtraction in which space is a protagonist and not a simple void This attitude is fully present in his sculptures figures outlined by a continuous wire that do not occupy space but activate it forms that do not imitate the body but interpret its posture through a selection of lines that accompany and exponentially multiply its tension the direction of the gaze A work that operates through a rigorously rational analysis of the image but then opens it to infinite creative and perceptive possibilities
