On 30 May 2026, Galleria 291 Est/Inc presents Orlando, a solo exhibition by José Witteveen, curated by Elisa Dell’Accio in collaboration with Andrea Acocella | Bar.lina. The works on display are drawn from Orlando, an artistic research project initiated by the artist in 2019 and inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel of the same name, in which the protagonist moves across gender identity, time, and space within a dimension of continuous transformation. This reference evolves into a research practice that rejects oppositional structures and binary models, favouring a fluid and process-oriented vision. Like the movement of the tide or the breath of the wind, Orlando unfolds through an organic rhythm in which nature becomes a metaphor for an ever-changing identity. The portraits of the various “Orlandos” emerge through a relational process: the artist engages in dialogue with the people involved, gathering elements that are translated into images through heterogeneous techniques including mixed-media printmaking, analogue photography, cyanotype, and photo engraving (intaglio printmaking). Artistic practice thus becomes a critical tool through which binary systems are questioned, while individual narratives contribute to the construction of a collective dimension. Developed throughout several artistic residencies, the project traces a network of dynamic connections rooted in activism and social engagement.
