MONTE SAN BIAGIO - Portella Experience - “Transformations on a Journey” (Trasformazioni in Viaggio), an initiative created as part of the Spazio Sviluppo project, is officially included in the Ministry of Culture's program for the 2026 European Heritage Days.
The event will take place at Torre Portella: Saturday, September 26th from 6:30 PM to 11:30 PM, and Sunday, September 27th from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Admission is free and open to the public until capacity is reached.
The 2026 European Heritage Days are dedicated to the theme “Protecting Heritage: Renew, Resist, Reinvent”. Portella Experience interprets this invitation by giving the Tower a contemporary function as a place of encounter: not just a site to observe, but a space to live, cross, and narrate.
At the heart of the initiative is Spazio Sviluppo, a project that aims to connect associations, operators, businesses, cultural entities, and citizens, turning local resources into new opportunities for development, promotion, and participation. Portella Experience stems from this very approach: building projects through collaboration among different partners, pooling skills, ideas, and resources around a shared location and identity.
The idea was proposed by APS Monte San Biagio nel Cuore, an organization that has long believed in the historical and cultural value of Torre Portella and has already promoted several initiatives at the site over the years. The proposal was immediately embraced by Soc. Coop. Foglia d’Oro ONLUS, a Spazio Sviluppo partner committed to regional development, which promptly helped develop the initiative. From this initial meeting, the collaboration expanded to other project partners, each involved according to their different skills and focus areas.
It is precisely this networking capacity that Spazio Sviluppo wants to make structural: fostering dialogue among associations, social enterprises, cultural operators, and local entities to build initiatives capable of giving visibility, content, and new functions to regional landmarks.
Torre Portella as an “exchange station” along the Appian Way. With Portella Experience, this journey takes a step forward: Torre Portella is not merely the backdrop of the event, but part of the narrative. Located along the Appian Way, the Tower is reinterpreted as a contemporary “exchange station”: a place where people, art, memory, experiences, and local products meet, just as peoples, goods, ideas, and cultures moved along the ancient road over the centuries.
This is where the exhibition “Transformations on a Journey” by Antonella Iris De Pascale takes place. She is a contemporary artist who explores memory, perception, and emotional experience through painting, photography, and mixed media. The journey depicted in her works is not just physical movement, but transformation: the places passed through become memory, memory changes over time, and through art, it takes on new forms. At Torre Portella, the outer journey along the Appian Way thus meets the artist's inner journey.
The exhibition route will be accompanied by readings curated by Koinè APS, featuring the voice of Francesco Latilla, and is sponsored by Agarte - Fucina delle Arti. The Appian Way will also be highlighted through the presentation of the book “La Via Appia in Bicicletta” (The Appian Way by Bicycle) by Carmine Papa, creator of Appia Week, dedicated to slow travel along the Regina Viarum and to the encounters, landscapes, and communities that characterize its route.
The experience will also feature the folk music group “Cantastorie degli Ausoni” and a free tasting of local seafood products and local wine, provided by Soc. Coop. Foglia d’Oro ONLUS.
