What happens when an object breaks? Does its story end or a new one begin?
Manifiesto Blanco Gallery presents a new solo exhibition by Françoise Bertolini, an artist who, through sculpture and installation, explores the subtle boundary between loss and rebirth, fragility and transformation. At the heart of the exhibition project is a profoundly contemporary reflection: recycling, not simply as the recovery of material, but as the possibility of a new identity.
Having trained in Fine Arts with a focus on sculpture, Françoise dedicated the early years of her research to ceramics, bronze, and stone, creating works that evoked feminine strength, fertility, and a woman's ability to change shape like water, adapting to time without losing her essence.
A seemingly random event, which occurred in 2006 during a stay in Cairo, marked a turning point in her career. The accidental breaking of a vase sparked a new artistic exploration: the fragments destined to be discarded became the protagonists of her works. From that gesture emerged a language that focuses on vulnerability, the loss of identity brought on by destruction, and the surprising capacity of matter—and of human beings—to regenerate.
Each work is an open-ended narrative.
Murano glass, silk, felt, steel wool, and recycled materials interact in unexpected combinations. The artist removes objects from their original context to give them new meaning, bringing out unexpected beauty precisely where there once seemed to be only waste. The different textures, the transparency of the materials, the light, and the void become narrative elements capable of evoking profound emotions and triggering associations that belong to the viewer's unconscious.
There is no single interpretation of Françoise's sculptures, oil paintings, and collages. Her works suggest, question, and provoke. They invite the audience to actively participate, to construct their own interpretative journey, and to recognize how every transformation, even chromatic, can generate new possibilities for meaning.
The creative process follows a delicate balance between intuition and listening to the material. Different shapes, colors, objects, and materials are combined without a predetermined pattern; it is the dialogue that arises between the fragments, the tensions of space, the reflections of light, and the surfaces that slowly guide the composition toward its own completeness. Even the exhibition space of Manifiesto Blanco becomes part of the work, becoming a narrative itself.
Françoise's works speak of resilience without rhetoric. They demonstrate how every fracture can hold the possibility of rebirth, and how time, even when it seems marked by loss, can become a place where new awareness develops. In an era where the concept of sustainability concerns both materials and thought, the artist's work offers a perspective capable of transforming waste into value and fragmentation into a new form of identity.
Françoise Bertolini was born in Martigny, Switzerland. From 1974 to 1978, she studied sculpture at the Chelsea School of Art in London.
She subsequently spent time in Damascus, London, Milan, Casablanca, Cairo, and Florence. These sojourns abroad encouraged her to adapt and personalize her expressive techniques, moving from sculpture to painting and collage.
In 2018, she returned to Milan, where she currently lives and has become a "Milanese by heart." Her studio is at Officina de Rolandi, Creative Lab, Via Battista de Rolandi 14.
