On Wednesday, April 15 at 6:00 PM, the artist Elizabeth Frolet will present her work “Lettre à une feuille de papier / Letter to a Sheet of Paper,” a tribute to the now almost obsolete practice of communicating by writing (and sending) letters on paper. Today, a written and illustrated letter can become a work of art, carrying the same value as a painting or a drawing. It can also become a line, with a simple, poetic, and affectionate meaning; a memory to be carefully preserved, to be folded, put away, and reopened like a delicate and precious handkerchief. Frolet will also exhibit a selection of artist’s books, showcasing the countless possibilities of paper and of books that are handmade, written, and illustrated. The intimate space of the library, home to Artists Studio Roma, is the ideal setting to present these works, which will come into direct contact with the books that fill its walls.
The evening will be accompanied by poetry readings by Suzy Lapstun and Giulia Ripandelli.
Still on display is part of the exhibition of works on paper from Gallery Uno Berlin, “Art on Paper, Art with Paper.”
Artist Katarzyna Bak will guide visitors into the heart of the interaction between artists and papers.
Elizabeth Frolet, trained as a sculptor, works primarily around the theme of the body, its fragility, and its precarious balance. She uses a wide range of materials for this purpose: paper, writing, lead, gold, wood, fabric, ceramics, and light.
Suzy Lapstun, an Australian-Norwegian writer and poet, moves fluidly between written and oral expression, and across several languages including Italian. Drawing inspiration from her years spent in the Arctic, she published in 2022 the book Letters from the Arctic (illustrated by Rosendo Li; Eyewear Publishing), which blends narrative and poetry.
Giulia Ripandelli holds a diploma in Stage Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and is an art therapist with a Steinerian orientation. An eclectic artist, she has taken part in numerous group and solo exhibitions and competitions, where she has been a finalist and has won several awards. She has always combined her artistic work with writing poetry.
