Forms of Contemporary Japanese Art in the Italian Peninsula
March 28, 2026, 4:30 PM
On Saturday, March 28, the finissage of the group exhibition A Space of Exchanges and Connections. Forms of Contemporary Japanese Art in the Italian Peninsula, curated by Alberto Dambruoso and Mayumi Miyazawa, will take place at the Fondazione Venanzo Crocetti, with the participation of the artists Nobushige Akiyama, Yuriko Damiani, Uemon Ikeda, Machiko Kodera, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Kyoji Nagatani, Yoshin Ogata, Naoya Takahara, Sahoko Takahashi, and Kan Yasuda.
The event has been organized by the Fondazione Venanzo Crocetti with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture and under the patronage of the Italy-Japan Foundation and the Japanese Institute of Culture in Rome.
The exhibition project is part of the celebrations marking the 160th Anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship between Italy and Japan and is dedicated to contemporary Japanese artists who have chosen Italy as a privileged place for education, research, and creative synthesis.
The finissage will open with the Encounter with Japanese Poetry, held under the patronage of FUIS (Italian Federation of Writers), organized in collaboration with the Italy-Japan Foundation, starting at 4:30 PM.
Opening remarks will be given by Tetsuro Akanegakubo (Vice President of the Crocetti Foundation). Speakers will include Umberto Vattani (President of the Italy-Japan Foundation); Guidotto Colleoni (former Professor of Japanese Literature at Sapienza University of Rome, a renowned scholar of classical Japanese literature and poetry, including works composed in classical Chinese—kanshi—by Japanese authors such as Natsume Sōseki and Akutagawa Ryūnosuke); and Diego Martina (writer and translator of Japanese literature, a disciple of the haijin Kuroda Momoko, and among the winners of the 76th edition of the Japanese-language “Bashō-ō Memorial Haiku Contest,” dedicated to Matsuo Bashō), in conversation with Miho Tokimoto (lecturer in Japanese language at Sapienza University of Rome and scholar of Japanese language and culture pedagogy).
This will be followed by the presentation of the bilingual (Italian and Japanese) exhibition catalogue A Space of Exchanges and Connections. Forms of Contemporary Japanese Art in the Italian Peninsula, published by Bordeaux Edizioni.
The curators, artists, and publisher will be in attendance.
