Colour expresses the artist’s state of mind.” With this quotation by Vasily Grossman, the Soviet journalist and writer, Galleria Triphé is preparing to present to the public, from September 11 to 21, the solo exhibition of artist Flavio Petricca. Grossman’s statement should not be understood as a simple ode to colour, but as something much deeper: an invitation to dissociate artistic language from any descriptive obligation. Colours do not belong to anything objectively recognisable: green does not belong to nature, blue does not belong to the sea. Instead, they become forms of interiority, planes through which existence is perceived. This is certainly where Flavio Petricca’s work places its focus, rooted in a fundamental question: what happens when colour is no longer a characteristic of an object, but becomes the signifier of an experience? His works begin with recognisable elements—objects that belong to the everyday life of each and every one of us. Buckets, tools and domestic objects are removed from their ordinary functionality through a minimal yet decisive intervention: colour. Colour does not take on a decorative role. Rather, it attempts to alter the viewer’s perception of the object, to the point of suspending its identity. Familiarity with the object becomes estrangement, while its functionality is transformed into an act of contemplation. Thus, Flavio Petricca’s artistic practice becomes an act of generosity towards the public, because the artwork recounts a “condition of looking.” One of the most celebrated artists to have made colour a central theme of his artistic production is Anish Kapoor, who has consistently explained how colour is capable of generating space, depth and presence. By entering infinite spaces and cavities, colour itself becomes a form of mental matter. And so, when observing Petricca’s works—where saturated blue invades a white surface and red transforms a bucket into a luminous presence—it becomes clear that their purpose is not to produce images, but to alter the viewer’s mental space. Colour has taken on an importance that often extends far beyond art. It has become a tool for constructing political and cultural imaginaries. National flags, environmental movements, global communication strategies and digital communication algorithms all use colour to communicate rapidly, immediately and universally. Colours thus become “instruments of recognition.” With his statement, Grossman seeks to restore freedom to artistic language. The same is true for Flavio Petricca: colour generates a new space of possibilities. His work is an invitation to learn how to observe before allowing oneself to be carried away by misleading interpretations. Looking at Petricca’s works, I reflected on how his most recent artistic production also engages in a dialogue with the thought of Gilles Deleuze, for whom works of art do not represent what we see, but produce sensations. From this emerges the creation of the artwork as a “field of forces,” in which the viewer becomes psychologically and physically involved. Colour therefore becomes a means of entering another dimension, one to be crossed and experienced. As Johannes Itten maintained, colour does not describe the world: it recreates it within the consciousness of the viewer. In a society dominated by an excess of images, colour risks becoming nothing more than seduction and marketing. Petricca rejects this tendency: he slows the image down and brings colour into a state of contemplation, removing it from fleeting communication. The thought of Grossman and Petricca therefore meet at a common point: the possibility that the object becomes merely a threshold to be crossed, rather than the centre of everything. Because contemporary art does not seek to change the world: it seeks to make it enigmatic. It seeks to rekindle that dormant fire that lives in the pleasure of discovering things, where memory, politics and imagination can finally meet once again.
