|The City that Generates Health: This is the concept at the heart of the initiative scheduled for March 4 at 6:00 PM at Spazio WeGil in Rome, on the occasion of World Obesity Day. The event establishes a direct connection between urban planning, the quality of public spaces, and the fight against one of the most significant chronic diseases of our time.
The meeting takes place within the framework of the exhibition Rome Third Millennium, conceived by Ambassador Umberto Vattani and promoted by the association Art Diplomacy. The exhibition project offers a reading of the Italian capital as a dynamic organism, capable of extending from the historic center to the sea, reconnecting neighborhoods and landscapes, and overcoming a fragmented vision of the city. In presenting the exhibition, Vattani emphasized the idea of a Rome that does not live solely on memory, but interprets the present and shapes its future through a renewed awareness of urban space.
On March 4, this vision engages directly with the theme of public health. Obesity will be addressed as a complex chronic disease that impacts quality of life and increases the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. It is not merely an individual issue, but a collective challenge involving environment, social organization, and public policy choices.
Cities profoundly influence lifestyles. The availability of accessible spaces, pedestrian pathways, green areas, and local services shapes daily movement and fosters relationships. Thoughtful urban planning can support healthy behaviors, while poor design can amplify sedentary lifestyles and inequalities. The reflection proposed on March 4 starts from this awareness and aims to strengthen the link between territorial governance and prevention.
The exhibition Rome Third Millennium highlights the need to understand the capital as an integrated system, capable of generating new centralities and connections extending as far as Ostia. In this perspective, the city becomes a health infrastructure — a space that educates, guides everyday choices, and can concretely contribute to promoting positive lifestyles.
The initiative offers an opportunity for in-depth discussion for the media and for those engaged in observing urban and health policies. At its core lies a clear message: health is built not only in healthcare facilities, but also in neighborhoods, parks, streets, and public spaces. A more livable city is a city that invests in its future and in the quality of life of its citizens.
The event will include the screening of Corpo Libero, a documentary by Donatella Romani and Roberto Amato, produced by Telomero Produzioni with the contribution of Lilly and under the patronage of the Amici Obesi Association. The film explores obesity through four patient stories and the perspective of clinicians. Premiered during the twentieth edition of the Rome Film Festival, it is the first documentary to address obesity from a comprehensive point of view, combining medical insight with the lived experiences of patients. It tells four emblematic stories of individuals who gradually lost connection with their bodies and well-being, only to rediscover themselves and seek a renewed relationship with their health, reclaiming the freedom to live fully.
